One night Chick hops onto the farmer's house and has a browse on his computer CLICK soon she's shopping online for t Hey kids Wanna be terrified of the internet Here s a book for you This book is ridiculous I heartily support children s books actually tackling real world issues like how to navigate technology without traumatizing yourself But there are plenty of real world dangers on the internet without over dramatizing the most Dateline centric ones The message of this book is this spoiler I guess if you go online you will become a compulsive shopper then you will be murdered by a stranger you meet in the woods Christ Stranger danger 20 Cool message But also why does the book shift from online shopping to predation The logic is not flowing there And yes we don t want kids to fall prey to online predators but this is sooooo heavy handed And the reality is most kids are not going to be abducted by weirdos they meet on social media so this just seems like indulgent fear mongering about technology a giant pet peeve of mine However parents will probably love it because it seems so hip and with the times

Ittle Red Riding Hood for the iPad generation this is the perfect book for teaching children how to stay safe online Wrapped up a lesson on digital citizenship with this book and found it to be pretty effective Because we began with Once Upon a TimeOnline we were able to bring it around to remind ourselves that the internet isn t bad per se but kids need to make sure an adult is in the loop any time they use the internet Chick goes to meet her new friend without telling dad or mum In classes we also concluded that there are plenty of awesome things to do on the internet but if anyone is asking us to keep something secret from parents or caregivers it should raise a red flag I wouldn t necessarily just hand this to a kid for pleasure reading but I think it worked well in the context of a rounded discussion I think the stark ending to what appears to be a silly story is impactful

This book was deeply disturbing I understand that internet safety is an issue relevant even to toddlers but I think this book seriously misses the mark with communicating anything useful First the chick uses the internet without permission to buy loads of pointless expensive things including a weirdly sadistic trip to Spa

Well this was downright scary The audience is clearly really little kids with simple text crisp and bright illustrations uplifting rhyme schemes an opportunity to introduce terminology such as browse and software and the concept that simple clicking can lead to purchasing large things However I don't think it did a good job demonstrating that purchasing items have conseuences it was cute to see that all the far

This is another in digital citizenship read alouds intended for children This is a tough one to review On one hand it's extremely clever and funny It's a parody of Little Red Riding Hood with a chicken sneaking into a farmer's house only to be captivated by his computer and the internet The chicken buys a bunch of expensive things and even starts talking and meeting a new friend All of this is done without any permission or guidance of cour

I had high hopes for this one and from the description purchased it to use with my 1st and 2nd graders about using the internet responsibility Unfortunately it doesn’t teach any of that The chicken buys tons of fun stuff for all the farm animals with no conseuences Then the book ends with her meeting a wolf who had pretended online to be a chicken I had to check multiple times to see if there was a page I missed at the end The abrupt end
