A new night of Burlesque from the Helles Belles!
Published 18 July 2012
Four Colchester ladies have joined forces, forming their own Burlesque troupe, and performing their first show at the Judge & Jury pub in the heart of town on Thursday 2nd August.
The girls met via 15 Queen Street member Jade Channon, who held an open meet-up calling for ladies interested in performing. Three rose the call: Holly Barrett, Emmanuelle Carvell and Alexandra Davis. “We all share a passion for the art of burlesque, dressing up and having fun” says organiser Jade.
The aim of the night was to set up something similar to the many cabaret, speak easy, and burlesque nights they had enjoyed from the various locations they have lived and worked: Cambridge, Cornwall and London.
Jade (Miss Scarlet Love-A-Lot) has had experience as a model for hair and fashion shows, tattoo conventions and as a Suicide Girl online. The group brings together her love of vintage fashion and celebrating the female form.
Holly (Holly High Heels) has performed previously in Colchester at the Foresters Arms and other small venues around the town. She joined the group after going on a small hiatus, and realizing not performing made her sad.
Emmanuelle (Mademoiselle Emmanuelle) has been a dancer in London and helps choreograph the dances in the group. She wanted to perform something more fun and girly than her previous work.
Alex (Fanny Darling) has had previous experience in the performance art field. A participant in the Anthony Gormley ‘One & Other’ project in London, she stood on the fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square for one hour in July 2009. She also performed in Cambridge in a Godzilla suit smashing cardboard houses.
The Belles bring a wealth of experience to the table and combine all of this to put on their first night with frills and giggles, vintage tunes, pin up costumes, and a ‘go go’ girls theme. There is no nudity or sleaze.
Please come in your Sunday Best, enjoy two for one cocktails, tunes from 1920s – 1950s and cheer on the Belles on their first night. They will be performing at Judge & Jury on Thursday 2nd August from 9pm. Door open at 7pm. £4 advance, £5 on the door.
