Wivenhoe May Fair Turns Back the Clocks

To celebrate its 30th anniversary the Wivenhoe May Fair is set to turn back the clock on Saturday, 26 May when it stages this year’s famous free community arts and music event.

Aimed at all ages, this year’s family friendly charity fund raiser will bring back some of the highlights of its past and promises to be a fantastic afternoon. Full details of the entertainment will be announced over the coming months.
As in previous years the community-based festival, which has raised nearly £35,000 for charities since 2000, will be staged between noon and 6pm on the King George V Playing Field in the centre of the town.

The May Fair started as a peace festival in 1982. Although the format of the event changed over the years, the emphasis on providing entertainment while promoting green, organic and sustainable lifestyles remains. Regardless of the weather the festival is always well supported by music and art lovers, many of whom return every year.
The organisers are also keen to swell its ranks of volunteers to help stage the event. Riggers, stewards, bar people and the famous ‘green police’ are just some of the vital roles that need to be filled and the organisers would be delighted to hear from anyone who could spare a couple of hours or more on the day. Stall pitches are also available.
Mike Freeman of the Wivenhoe May Fair said: “We are really excited about focusing on the true essence of the May Fair to create a relaxed community event worthy of its 30th anniversary.
“The May Fair has always offered so much more than the corporate mega music festivals that have sprung up across the UK, but it takes a lot of work to maintain its unique atmosphere. Between now and the end of May our job is to build on its heritage and organise an eclectic event that will provide entertainment for all ages and tastes while raising much needed funds for our chosen charities.”
